Connect the printer to a network it officially supports, then add it from a device allowed to reach that network. Wi-Fi capability alone does not establish support for every radio band, security mode or printing application. Keep network access and print-function compatibility as separate checks.

Read the network specification first
Confirm supported bands and authentication modes for your exact region and model. Some printers are limited to 2.4 GHz; others support more. A phone connected to a router’s 5 GHz radio can sometimes reach a printer on its 2.4 GHz radio when both are on the same local network, but router isolation or segmentation can prevent that. Matching radio bands is not a universal requirement for discovery.
Infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct differ
Infrastructure mode joins the printer to your router. Wi-Fi Direct creates a direct device-to-printer connection where supported. Switching a phone to a printer’s direct network can alter its internet connectivity. Keep track of which route you are testing, because the printer may appear twice when both discovery paths are enabled.
A safe setup sequence
- Turn on the printer and check its displayed status.
- Use the manual’s control-panel or official app setup route.
- Select your intended network and enter credentials only into the trusted printer setup.
- Confirm the connected network name using a status screen or network report.
- Connect your computer or phone to the permitted local network.
- Add the exact printer and print a neutral one-page proof.
If discovery fails
Check whether the device is on a guest network, whether client isolation is enabled and whether a VPN changes local access. Do not broadly disable a firewall or reduce Wi-Fi security as a first step. A business network may deliberately block discovery; ask its administrator for an approved printing route. If the manual supports adding a printer by its local address, use the current address from the printer rather than a remembered old one.
After changing routers
An old saved network name or password may leave the printer disconnected while the computer continues working. Follow the model’s documented reconnection steps and remove only obsolete printer instances you have identified. Avoid a factory reset until you understand which saved network, fax, scan and application settings it erases.
For iPhone or iPad, continue with the AirPrint guide. For a failure after previously successful setup, use the offline decision tree to separate network problems from document problems.
